Filmfare Awards History
The Introduction
The Filmfare Magazine introduced these awards in the year 1954. The Filmfare magazine belongs to The Time Group. Since then these awards are presented every year. However, the award ceremony was not held in the year 1987 and 1988.
Filmfare Awards are devoted to Hindi Cinema only. However, it has varients of Indian Cinema too. Filmfare Awards South, Filmfare Awards East, and Filmfare Marathi Awards are also presented by the Filmfare Magazine.
The Filmfare Awards were initially called “Clare Awards”. The name was given after Clare Mendonca, the editor of The Time of India (Times Group).
National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards both were introduced in the year 1954. National Film Awards were decided by a panel appointed by the Government of India. Whereas, Filmfare Awards adopted a different in contrast to the National Film Awards.
Filmfare Awards introduced a dual voting system. This dual system consisted of public voting and the opinion of a team of experts. The Filmfare Awards became very popular and the dual system was one of the reasons for their popularity.
First Filmfare Awards
- The First Filmfare Awards was held on 21st March 1954 in the Metro Theater, Bombay (now Mumbai).
- There were only five Award Categories in the 1st Filmfare Awards.
- Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Music Directors were the awards presented in the first award ceremony.
- Do Bigha Zameen became the first Filmfare Best Film.
- Bimal Roy won the first Best Director Award for the film Do Bigha Zameen.
- Dilip Kumar won the first Best Actor Award for the film Daag.
- Meena Kumari won the first Best Actress Award for the film Baiju Bawra.
- Naushad won the Best Music Director award for the song Tu Ganga Ki Mauz from Baiju Bawra.
No Award Ceremony in 1986 and 1987
- Filmfare Awards are being presented every year since 1954.
- However, the award ceremony could not be held in the years 1986 and 1987.
- The Bombay Film Industry went on a strike due to certain strict regulations on films and music by Maharashtra Government.
- Consequent to the strike the ceremony could not be held for two years.
- Thus the winners of 1985 were awarded on 28 January 1987.
