Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer


The Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer is a part of the annual Filmfare Awards. Filmfare Magazine presents these awards to recognize the talent of a Female Playback Singer for Hindi (Bollywood) film.The first Filmfare Awards was held on 21 March 1954 in Bombay (now Mumbai). However, the award for the Best Playback Singer came into existence in the 6th Filmfare Awards 1959.

Initially, there was no separate category for male and female singers. And the winner could either be a male or a female. However, in the 14th Filmfare Awards 1967, the award was split into two different categories. These new categories were thus named Best Male Playback Singer and Best Female Playback Singer.

Highlights for 1950s & 1960s

  • The Award for Best Playback Singer was introduced in the 6th Fimfare Awards (1959). Lata Mangeshkar became the first winner of the award. She won it for the song Aa Ja Re Pardesi from Madhumati. There was no other nomination in the year 1959.
  • Mukesh, a male singer, won the Award in the 7th Filmfare Awards (1960). He won it for the song Sab Kuchh Seekha Hum Ne from Anari. Lata Mangeshkar also received a nomination in the year 1960.
  • Mohammed Rafi, a male singer, won the Award in the 8th Filmfare Awards (1961). Lata Mangeshkar, a Female competitor, received the rest two nominations.
  • Lata Mangeshkar won the Award in the 10th Filmfare Awards (1963) for the song Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil from Bees Saal Baad. She received one more nomination for the song Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha from Anpadh. Mohammed Rafi also received a nomination for the song Aye Gulbadan from Professor.
  • Mahendra Kapoor and Mohammed Rafi, both male, won the award in 1964 and 1965 respectively.
  • Lata Mangeshkar again won in the 13th Filmfare Awards (1966). She also received one more nomination for the song Ek Tu Na Mila from Himalay Ki God Mein. However, Mohammed Rafi also received a nomination for the song Chhoo Lene Do from Kaajal.
  • In the year 1967, Lata Mangeshkar received two nominations. However, Mohammed Rafi won the award for the song Bahaaron Phool Barsao from Suraj.
  • The Award for Best Female Playback Singer was awarded in the year 1968 for the first time.
  • Asha Bhosle became the first winner of the Best Female Singer. She won it for the song Gareebon Ki Suno from Dus Lakh.

Highlights for 1970s

  • Asha Bhosle captures all three nominations in the 20th Filmfare Awards (1973). Thus, she became the first female singer to receive this achievement.
  • Mohammed Rafi received all three nominations in the 16th Filmfare Awards (1969). Hence, Mohammed Rafi is the first singer to received all nominations in this category.
  • However, Meena Kumari is the first person who received all nominations for any category in the Filmfare Awards. She received all three nominations in the 10th Filmfare Awards in the Best Actress Category.
