Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role was a part of the Annual Filmfare Award. The first Filmfare Awards were held on 21 March 1954. However, the award for Best Performance in a Negative Role was introduced in the year 1992.
Sadashiv Amarapurkar became the first winner of this award. He won it for his character of Maharani in the film Sadak. Saif Ali Khan became the last actor to receive the award in the year2007. He received the award for his character “Langda” Tyagi in the film Omkara.
Some Bollywood Lead Actors/Actresses have also received nominations for this award and won too. Kajol, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Preity Zinta, Urmila Matondkar, Shah Rukh Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Khanna, John Abraham, Govinda, Jackie Shroff, and Sunil Shetty are a few of them.
Amrish Puri received the nominations seven (7) times. However, he could not win for a single time. He holds the record for the most number of nominations.
Amrish Puri also holds the record for most nominations without a win. He keeps the record for most consecutive nominations (3) from 1991 to 1993.
Nana Patekar and Ashutosh Rana share the record for most wins. Both have two awards in the category.
Nana Patekar won two awards out of two nominations whereas Ashutosh Rana won the same number of awards out of three nominations.
Ashutosh Rana is the only actor to win the award in consecutive years. He won in the year 1999 for Dushman and in 2000 for Sangharsh.
Danny Denzongpa is the only actor who got multiple nominations in a single year. He received two nominations in the year 1994 but he failed to win.
Danny Denzongpa received five (5) nominations but he failed to win any of them.
Similarly, Naseeruddin Shah received four (4) nominations but could not win any of them.
Preity Zinta is the only actor who received another nomination in the same year. In the year 2004, she was nominated for Best Performance in a Negative Role for the film Armaan. She also received a nomination for the Best Actress Award for Koi Mil Gaya in the same year.
Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra are the only actors who received nominations for another acting category for the same film. In the year 2005 both Priyanka and Abhishek received nominations for Best Performance in a Negative Role. Priyanka received a nomination for the film Aitraaz whereas Abhishek received a nomination for Yuva. Priyanka Chopra won the award.
Both Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan also received nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively, for the same films, in the respective category of Male and Female. Abhishek Bachchan won the award for Yuva.
Arbaaz Khan won the Award in 1997 for the film Daraar in his debut film. He thus became the first actor to win the award as a debutante.
